Techno Artist Abdul Haqq
A very exciting program awaits..I had the pleasure to have both Detroit's own techno artist Abdul Haqq and Producer/Dj J Shaw over to the studio for a live "painting to music" session! This episode starts off with a brief interview/introduction of Abdul Haqq which eventually morphs into the mix that J Shaw provided skillfully during the painting session. Haqq, who is one of the most influential painters and artists in the electronic dance music community, outlines how his journey as a techno painter started as well as sharing his thoughts on what electronic dance music means to him. Interview + BASS & JUNGLE DJ Mix w/ DJ ZAP A.K.A. THE JUNGLIST
For this month's show The Anxious Beat had the tremendous pleasure of meeting highly respected Detroit DJ pioneer and radio wave legend - Jay DJ ZAP Blak a.k.a. THE JUNGLIST. Almost every guest that's been on this show has mentioned DJ ZAP at one point or another…and with that said, the only other two mentioned just about every single time has been The Electrifying Mojo and The Wizard a.k.a. Jeff Mills… so there you have it. ZAP’s mad tight DJ skill and unique style undoubtedly inspired and shaped the ears of any and everybody in Detroit who heard his master mixes, whether it was battling on legendary radio shows like Mojo’s “THE MIXADOME” (DJ ZAP “The Guardian Of Steel”) or if they witnessed him bring the house down in the club.
In 1988 ZAP also became resident DJ at the biggest club in Detroit and Michigan called The Dancery after winning a prestigious mixtape contest - it was here that ZAP eventually met the other members of their future and lethal DJ crew quartet called “The Four Horsemen” which consisted of DJ ZAP, DJ Fingers, Rick Hines and DJ Nico.
We also get to learn more about when ZAP first discovers UK Jungle via Mike Huckaby (R.I.P.) and ZAP shares his thoughts on how he took on introducing this new sound back in 1992 to the Detroit audience, being the first to play it over the radio as well as in the mainstream clubs around the city. Later our conversation also touches on DJ culture, being an introvert, ghettotech, Disco D (R.I.P.), DEMF and much much more.
Please ENJOY and BEWARE of these 2 black belt mixes coming up, you might wanna go sell your turntables after this one… Check out the order of the mayhem down below..
